My phone vibrates on the sofa cushion next to me and I pick it up. “FYI, mom, I’m getting a divorce.” Who texts such a thing? My son, that’s who. Instead of texting my response I call him. He is not getting away with a simple text. I’m invested in this relationship. His wife is the only daughter I have. They’ve been together since high school. “It’s mutual and amicable” is all he says. “What happened?” I ask.
