You long for the days of letter-writing to slow things down to an axolotl’s pace. You rail at the indifference of wires and satellites and cellular phones . . . and you curse their cold efficiency for completing the calls you wait a lifetime not to hear.

Out of the dark hollow a smell of water . . .
